Summary: How to Safely Dispose of Waste Solar Panels

How to Safely Dispose of Waste Solar Panels

Solar panel is a device that responds to light and converts light energy into electric energy.
Many materials can produce the photovoltaic effect, including monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, gallium arsenide, copper indium selenide and others. They share basically the same power generation principle. Taking crystalline silicon as an example to illustrate the photovoltaic power generation process:
P-type crystalline silicon is doped with phosphorus to form N-type silicon, creating a P-N junction.
When sunlight hits the surface of a solar panel, part of the photons are absorbed by the silicon material. The photon energy is transferred to silicon atoms, causing electron transition to form free electrons. These free electrons accumulate on both sides of the P-N junction and create a potential difference. When an external circuit is connected, electric current flows through the circuit under the voltage and generates certain output power. Essentially, this is the process of converting photon energy into electrical energy.
Solar panels bring great convenience to outdoor lighting. As a new energy source, solar energy is energy-saving and environmentally friendly. Compared with ordinary batteries and rechargeable batteries, solar panels feature better energy efficiency and environmental performance. However, defective and discarded solar panels will cause new pollution, making solar panel recycling an essential issue.
Many components inside waste solar panels are recyclable and reusable.
For example: crystalline silicon can be reused in the heavy metal industry; glass panels can be recycled by the glass manufacturing industry; aluminum frames can be sent to aluminum refineries. Cables and connectors can be crushed down and recycled into copper particles, while waste plastics can be used as fuel.

Precautions for Handling Waste Solar Panels

  1. Do not touch damaged but repairable solar panels with bare hands. Even scrapped panels may carry electric shock risks. Wear well-insulated gloves such as cotton gloves or rubber gloves at all times to prevent electric shock.
  2. If the solar panel is connected with cables, disconnect the cables first. If disconnection is not possible, cut off the connecting cables with proper tools. Wrap any exposed copper wires tightly with insulating tape to avoid electric shock. Then transport the solar panel to a designated waste disposal site.
During the whole operation, cover the front side of the panel with a blue tarpaulin or cardboard, or place it face down to avoid direct sunlight. Sunlight may trigger the photoelectric conversion process and raise safety hazards. Even on cloudy days, keep the panel shielded to prevent accidental power generation.
The disposal of waste solar panels requires building a three-in-one system of technology, policy and market:
Improve recycling efficiency through technological innovation, standardize industrial chain behaviors via mandatory policies, and stimulate recycling enthusiasm by market mechanisms. It will ultimately realize a green closed loop of the whole life cycle of the photovoltaic industry and contribute to achieving the carbon neutrality goal.
